German Volunteers Visit Zomba Mental Hospital to Explore Collaboration Opportunities

By Van Jelly James Mankhokwe Mar 12, 2026
Zomba Mental Hospital (ZMH) recently had the privilege of hosting a group of volunteers from You Are Not Alone e. V. – Aid Organization for Malawi, a German-based humanitarian organization. Founded by professionals from diverse backgrounds, the organization is united by a mission: to develop impactful projects for and with the people of Malawi.

The visit was led by Koam, the organization’s leader, accompanied by his team. Koam shared a personal connection to healthcare, noting that his daughter is a nurse, highlighting the organization’s deep commitment to community service. The team’s visit aimed to understand Zomba Mental Hospital’s operations and explore potential areas of collaboration.

A Warm Welcome from Hospital Leadership
The visitors were warmly welcomed by the hospital’s Director General, Dr. Raphael Piringu, who provided an overview of the hospital and its services. Dr. Piringu addressed the stigma surrounding mental health facilities, acknowledging the negative perceptions many hold about Zomba Mental Hospital.

He emphasized that the hospital’s reality is far from these misconceptions. Staff at ZMH work tirelessly to provide compassionate care and support for patients facing mental health challenges. Dr. Piringu also highlighted ongoing efforts to improve patient care and raise awareness within the community.

Challenges and Community Support
Dr. Piringu noted that Zomba Mental Hospital operates primarily through government funding, as the institution currently does not have major donors. Despite this challenge, the hospital continues to receive support from generous well-wishers who donate items such as used clothes and sanitary materials for patients. These contributions, though modest, make a significant difference in the daily lives of those receiving care.

Strengthening Community and Global Partnerships
The visiting team learned about the hospital’s community outreach efforts, particularly in areas around Pirimiti Mission Hospital. The visit provided an opportunity for both sides to exchange ideas, share experiences, and discuss ways to strengthen collaboration in the future.

Looking Ahead
As the visit concluded, both Zomba Mental Hospital and the visiting volunteers expressed optimism about future partnerships aimed at enhancing mental health services. International collaboration not only strengthens healthcare systems but also promotes shared responsibility in improving lives.

Zomba Mental Hospital looks forward to continued engagement with partners who share a vision of compassion, dignity, and excellence in mental health care.
