By Van Jelly James Mankhokwe Feb 16, 2026
In response to the growing number of cholera cases and confirmed infections in Zomba, Zomba Mental Hospital has taken proactive steps to strengthen infection prevention and control within the facility. Today, the hospital conducted a dedicated training session for staff members aimed at improving awareness, preparedness, and readiness to respond effectively to potential cholera risks.
Understanding the importance of early preparedness, hospital management has organized a hospital-wide orientation for all staff members, scheduled to take place from Monday, 16th February to Thursday, 19th February, 2026. The orientation is designed to provide comprehensive guidance on cholera prevention, early identification, hygiene practices, and coordinated response measures to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and visitors.
The training reflects the hospital’s commitment to maintaining high standards of care while protecting vulnerable patients. By equipping staff with updated knowledge and reinforcing infection prevention protocols, the hospital aims to reduce the risk of disease transmission and ensure continuity of safe healthcare services.
To further strengthen preventive measures, management has introduced key safety directives:
• The provision of cooked food by guardians has been suspended.
• Food businesses operating around the hospital campus have been banned until further notice.
These actions are intended to minimize potential sources of contamination and enhance overall food safety within the hospital environment.
Zomba Mental Hospital remains committed to promoting public health, patient safety, and continuous quality improvement. Through collective responsibility, staff training, and strong preventive action, the hospital continues to prioritize the wellbeing of everyone under its care.
